Project 2-Final
The intent of my artwork is to show growth through delicate objects, or try to achieve a sense of growth by making it perfect. "But how can you show growth?" there are many ways i just approached it with simple forms that i could connect with emotionally. So my vessels are boxes, with a texture on the outside to represent the growth. I came up with the box idea through lots of research and my own idea into what I wanted. I wanted a box vessel because to me all humans are like boxes, no one can see inside; which means we can only see the outside. So I wanted to represent the growth on the outside because when you try to look into each one you cannot really see inside them. The shape I chose was not originally what i was going for, but it worked out because it made a geometric shape like a triangle, so it could stand up on all of its sides.
One Idea....I kept the shape because I originally intended to have a coffin with lotus flowers on it. A lotus means rebirth, and a coffin means death, but with a death there is always new life to replace the soul of the deceased. I made the shape and tried multiple ways on trying to put on the flowers. I saw my flaw in the way I approached this side of the project and I knew I had to change it, so I took the shape and altered it to something new a able to stand. This was not the idea I had in mind, so I moved on to a new plan. >>>>>>
Why Hand building?Last semester in ceramics I learned that I hand build faster than i throw on the wheel. I also pay attention to detail and am a lot more careful with the clay. I have a better sense of patience when I hand build my things individually.

Is a Gateway to Another. The new plan included a new shape, but with a texture on it to show the growth. Through trial and error with the shape I ended up with a three sided triangle shape because this was what I was looking for originally.
I chose the rasp texture because I had accidentally made deep marks and could not get them to go away and then i saw how much I liked it, and it made me want to touch my project more and more. I smoothed the parts that were not rough and made sure to keep the contrast when I glazed each piece. I chose to glaze with raspberry and white because I needed something light. If the color was dark the message would not read through with what I wanted and the texture would show up on the outside. So for my glaze test I glazed a coral piece from last year and made it all raspberry to see what it would do. The glaze was extremely thin but I liked the yellow and red together. I dipped each piece with white and put the raspberry on top of it and it created a contrast I couldn't get from any other glaze. The variety in the lip is what made me continue to make two different sets to try to challenge myself into unifying them. With the final set up the open pieces shaped more like triangles helped with holding up the fallen floral shaped pieces. On the wider openings you can see into each vessel but with the smaller lips its harder to look into. |
Artist Inspiration
Box ShapeI was looking online at box shapes and this was what I found but I modified the structure into a three sided triangle.

Michael EdenTexture Inspiration
Eden has had a great inspiration on work in the past. For this project specifically though i saw the texture I wanted to create. I wanted people to be able to touch it and feel it, and to possibly change the shape of the form, like his. Before finding the rasp I did not know how to approach this idea, but through his works I found myself trying different ways.

Sarah SaxGlaze Inspiration
I Always want a delicate glaze with a good contrast so I always look to Sarah Sax. She uses a large color scheme that makes the colors pop on the background or foreground of her works. Thats what inspired me to make each pieces with bright colors so the contrast can be seen from far away.
