Goals
Last year was a lot of trials and tribulations, but this year should be better and less mistakes because of how I learned from all my mistakes. This year I want to focus on my weak points and they determined my goals for this semester. My main goals are to come out of my comfort zone, use more techniques and more sketch booking.
When I say come out of my comfort zone I mean step away from the little thoughts and think on bigger terms or to put it shortly make it a challenge to build something new and fresh. I use a certain style and the repetition of it makes me bored, so I am deciding to step away from all the normal techniques I use and do different ones or focus on my weak points. What I plan to do this semester when it comes to coming out of the comfort zone I want to do something new and push myself to do new things. My plan is to make bigger scale things or more dainty usable things. I always go for obscure sculpture things, and I think it’s time to test how far I can go with a function of some sort. I plan on making a series of some kind (I have not chosen yet) and making it functional.
My second goal is to use more techniques and build upon my skills as a ceramicists. The technique I believe I need to work on is throwing. Everything from pinching pots to slab objects I can do on good terms, but throwing is the weakest area. The only way for me to get the technique down is to keep going and keep learning from my mistakes. The only way to get the technique down is to follow the book or your direction. The direction I’m taking is that of getting each motion down first. My plan is to take the first project and throw. I know this a risk but the risk is worth getting the knowledge and know how when it comes to teaching in the future.
The third goal is to work on my sketch booking and research because last year I made the mistake of not sketch booking or going deeper into my research. My plan is to sketch out my ideas and research before I try to touch any clay at all. By doing that my ideas would be clearer and less mistakes would be made on my projects, and on the plus side I will be able to get more progress in with my work. My plan is to continuously document and look up artist and take it farther as to how they came to the process of building their structures.
In conclusions my goals reflect on how I built last year and this year I am improving on my mistakes. To better understand my self these goals will help with future studio classes. The goals I have set I wish to achieve this year and it’s very possible they will met.
